Sakhi -- Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Lalo and Bhago
On one of his journeys, Guru Nanak stayed with a carpenter in a place called Emnabad. The carpenter's name was Lalo. A local wealthy man named Bhago decided to give a feast and invited all around, including Guru Nanak. However, the Guru did not attend; when asked why, Nanak replied he would rather eat the carpenter's bread because it had been earned by honest work, whereas Bhago's great feast had been the result of exploitation of the poor. Nanak said that the bread had been stained by the blood of the poor. When Bhago protested, Guru Nanak took a piece of Lalo's bread and a piece of Bhago's bread and suqeezed them both. Milk dripped from Lalo's bread, while Bhago's dripped with blood. Bhago then repented and devoted the rest of his life to those in need.

I find this sakhi very inspirational. It inspires you to work hard and to only keep what you need and share the rest.

Mistaken Identity - Film Screening This Monday November 20th @ 7pm

CELEBRATING UNITY ... CELEBRATING DIVERSITY

(Please View Poster for More Details, and spread the word)

You are invited to a screening of the award-winning documentary Mistaken Identity: Discovering Sikh Neighbours, a film focusing on Sikh Americans, post-9/11. This documentary film has won the Golden Lion Award, the Remi Gold Statuette and the NYIIFV Festival in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It was first screened in Canada at the House of Commons in 2005 to great acclaim.

Professor Sudan Burgeon, from Yuba College, California had this to say upon viewing the film:
"I can truly say that this was the best film on Sikhism I have ever seen, especially in terms of building cross-cultural understanding. Both Sikhs and non-Sikhs loved the film. We had excellent discussion sessions after the viewing, and it provided the basis for dialogue between Sikhs and non-Sikhs. No other film has had such a strong impact on bringing together people of mixed cultures in a spirit of tolerance and understanding. In addition, the music was beautiful! The film had just the right mixture of elements: it was upbeat, yet deeply serious and moving. It is beautifully directed; it provides the viewers with many different voices and responses; it opens the doorway for tolerance and understanding; and it touches the heart. This is one of the most powerful and moving films I have seen. I give it my highest recommendation.”
Come out for an evening of film, discussion and snacks.

Sadh Sangat

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Once the State Governor (subedar) came to see Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj with the question "O Guru, when you are pleased with a Sikh, what do you give him?"

"When I am pleased with a Sikh, I send to his house one who is dear to me" replied Maharaj.
"Guru ji, if you are very pleased with a Sikh, then what do you give him"

"When I am more pleased with a Sikh, I send to his house, two of my dear ones."

"And if, Guruji, you are still more pleased, what would you give him?"

"In that case I would send three of my dear ones to his house."

The subedar continued to repeat his question, until Guru Ji had raised the number of dear ones to ten.

"When you send ten dear ones to a Sikh, what does the Sikh gain out of it?”

"The more the dear ones that visit a Sikh, the more is the praise and discussion of the Lord. In the company of saints, spiritual discussion automatically takes place. Whatever the Sikh hears will stay in his mind, and ultimately liberate him from the cycle of birth and death. At the same time his livelihood will flourish, and his family will also follow his example in serving the saintly persons, to become pure like him. Such are the benefits of a saint's visit."
